Boyd CAT’s Apprentice Technician program provides on-the-job training opportunities under the direct supervision of experienced, highly qualified technicians.

Over the course of their Boyd CAT apprenticeship, participants get hands-on experience maintaining, repairing and rebuilding various types of equipment. In the process, they develop the practical skills required to build a long-term career in the heavy equipment and diesel industry.

Apprentice Technicians follow Boyd CAT’s well-structured career development path, which includes quarterly scheduled training sessions. These include formal classroom training, on-the-job learning and skills sessions.

The path was designed to help Apprentice Technicians gradually progress to roles such as Shop Technician, Shop Technician I and, ultimately, Field Technician.

Apprenticeship Requirements

Successful Apprentice Technicians must:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be able to read and comprehend repair manuals
  • Understand how to use a micrometer and other basic measuring tools
  • Be able to work overtime, including weekends

One year of previous mechanical experience is preferred.
